BLOOMINGTON, Ind.–Indiana University police, Bloomington police and Indiana State Police are preparing for increased activity in Bloomington during IU Homecoming and Halloween weekend Oct. 30 to Nov. 1.
The university expects thousands of alumni, students, faculty, staff, families and other visitors on campus for the festivities. The weekend also includes Indiana football’s Halloween game against Minnesota, adding to the expected crowds in Bloomington.
The agencies are coordinating additional patrols and traffic enforcement to help keep the community safe.
IU Police Department officers will conduct additional patrols, including keeping red and blue lights on their vehicles for increased visibility. People can also sign up for IU emergency alerts by texting SafeIU to 77295 from Oct. 30 through Nov. 1.
Bloomington police will increase their presence throughout the weekend and manage pedestrian and vehicle traffic along Kirkwood Avenue during the Homecoming parade.
Indiana State Police will focus on traffic safety, including impaired driving, speeding and distracted driving. Troopers will also assist local agencies as needed.
IU Public Safety encourages visitors to plan transportation before going out, designate a sober driver, stay with their groups and use well-lit walking routes. Anyone who notices suspicious or concerning activity should call or text 911.
The university’s Emergency Management and Continuity team will coordinate with other safety partners, including the IU Intra Collegiate Emergency Medical Service, IU Events Services, Bloomington Fire Department and IU Health LifeLine, to support weekend events.
“We encourage everyone to plan ahead, take care of one another and make responsible decisions that support a safe homecoming weekend,” said Benjamin Hunter, associate vice president and superintendent for IU Public Safety.
Bloomington Police Chief Michael Diekhoff said his department will work with university and state police to provide a safe environment for residents and visitors.
